LUXURY HIGHLAND SINGLE MALT DISTILLERY - CHIEF MARKETING OFFICER

From Succession to Reinvention in Scotland: Leading the Transformation of a Scottish Beverages Icon

Success Story A Glance:

The company needed a Global Marketing & Communication Director capable of repositioning a premium Scotch whisky house for aggressive growth, with deep expertise in whisky, strong US market credibility, and the stature to potentially become CEO. The role required revitalizing the brand’s image, mobilizing international markets, and relocating to Edinburgh, a rather atypical location.

An exhaustive international mapping across major and niche whisky houses, deep sector insight, and close alignment with leadership to identify a candidate with both marketing boldness and long-term succession potential.

The Challenge

In 2018, the company, a flagship whisky house within a global luxury maison’s wines & spirits division, faced a pivotal moment. As champagne production reached structural limits, the group identified premium whisky as a new growth driver and was tasked with accelerating growth and repositioning the brand for a younger, more global audience.

The mandate was to recruit a Global Marketing & Communication Director, with long-term CEO potential.

The future leader had to:

• Possess deep expertise in premium Malt whisky and strong credibility in the US market

• Mobilize global subsidiaries to prioritize whisky growth within a champagne-dominated group

• Reinvent the brand’s positioning while operating from Edinburgh, a demanding relocation

The Approach

We conducted an exhaustive mapping of established and emerging whisky houses across Scotland, Ireland, the UK, and the US. Beyond corporate pedigree, we sought marketing boldness: leaders who understood heritage yet could modernize a premium brand within a luxury environment.

Matthew C. stood out. With experience at some of the most relevant global whisky brands, he had built strong US market exposure before moving into global marketing and innovation roles. His trajectory reflected both commercial depth and brand vision.

Crucially, he had Scottish roots, though he was then based in Ireland after years in the United States.

The Click

The decisive shift was not so much about geography, but about a sense of legacy. As discussions progressed, it became clear that this role was more than a marketing leadership position. It was an opportunity to return home and shape the future of one of Scotland’s most iconic whisky houses.

The idea of contributing to a long-term vision reframed the opportunity entirely.

The ambition to double volumes, rejuvenate the brand, and expand the product portfolio aligned with Matthew’s appetite for impact. The move was no longer a career step; it was a new leadership canvas.

The Impact

Matthew C. joined as Global Marketing & Communication Director and, within two and a half years, expanded his scope to include business development. Five years later, he was appointed CEO and President of the company.

Under his leadership, the brand underwent visible reinvention: a younger, more contemporary image, award-winning expressions, renewed brand assets, and bold global campaigns.

What began as a critical succession search became a transformational chapter, for the Maison and for a leader who returned to Scotland to redefine both their futures.
